Handclapping Fun

My niece Hanniah is getting into singing nursery rhymes accompanied by hand-clapping. My sisters and I loved hand-clapping games when we were in grade school. I asked her if she knew CeCe My Playmate. She did not so I started teaching her these lyrics (The hand motions are not easy to teach a 4 year old, but so much fun!):

Ce Ce my playmate.
Come out and play with me,
and bring dollies three.
Climb up my apple tree.
Slide down my rainbow,
into my cellar door, and
we’ll be jolly friends,
forever more, more, -more, -more.

Well apparently I know a different version because as I was searching for a copy of the lyrics for my sister, I found these lyrics:

Say, say oh playmate,
Come out and play with me,
And bring your dollies three,
Climb up my apple tree.

Slide down my rain barrel,
Into my cellar door,
And we’ll be jolly friends,
Forever more – more – more!

Does anyone recall this song? Did you use either of these lyrics or did you use others?

Growing up, we used the first set of lyrics that you were used to. I can see where the change may have come in though as things are passed down small changes are always made. It could be that someone talked with their mouth full of marbles or someone else just thought Ce Ce was easier to sing than say, say.

You know, I’ve never heard this before. And I can’t for the life of me remember any I sang as a kid. My childhood memories are pretty spotty. LOL, it’s ashame because I know I’m forgetting some pretty good stuff.

  • pam

Frankly, I think I’m probably too old to remember this… 😉

  • Monique

Oh I so remember that! We used to do the 2nd version but said something else instead of “… dollies three” which I can’t remember and we said rainbow instead of rain barrel. We’d wrap it up by saying “More more 1-2-3-4”.

  • haleyhughes

OMG, yes, do I remember this! My sister and I drove my parents crazy with it.

I remember singing a version that has a little bit from both variations, plus some changes:

    Ce, Ce my playmate,
Won’t you come out and play,
    And bring dollies three,
    Climb up my apple tree,
    Slide down my rain barrel,
    Into my cellar door,
    And we’ll be jolly friends,
Forever more – more – shut the door!

Then my parents would usually sing “Find another song” at the end. 🙂

I used to sing this with my sister all the time! We knew the first version you had posted, but instead of ‘ce ce my playmate’ it was ‘Shake Shake my playmate’ with a hand shake game type thing..

It was fun! I miss it!

  • none

I am teaching my 5 yr old this song. I remeber it from when I was young. We use to sing a second part as well.

    Say, say oh playmate,
Come out and play with me,
    And bring your dollies three,
    Climb up my apple tree.
    Slide down my rainbow,
    Into my cellar door,
    And we’ll be jolly friends,
Forever more – more – more!

    So sorry playmate,
Can’t come out and play with you,
    My dollies have the flu,
Boo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo.
    Don’t have a rainbow,
    Don’t have a cellar door,
But we’ll still be jolly friends,
Forever more – more – more!

When I was at school – many moons ago, we used to sing..

    Ce Ce my playmate
Come out and play with me
    Ce Ce my bonnie bee
    Climb up the apple tree
    Slide down the drain pipe
    Into the cellar door
And we’ll be friends, friends, friends
    For ever more, more more

but my 7 y.o. DD sings a different version again, she sings…

    Ce Ce my playmate
Won’t you come play with me
    My Daddy has the flu
I don’t know what to do
    Slide down the drain pipe
    Into the candy store
    And suck a lollipop
    For ever more more more

  • Gabby

    CeCe my playmate,
come out and play with me,
    and bring your dollies 3,
    slide down my rainbow,
    into my cellar door,
    and we’ll be jolly friends
forever more more shut the door!

    So sorry playmate,
    i cannot play with you,
    my dollies have the flu,
boo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo,
    I Have No Rainbow
    Mum Closed The Cellar Door
    But Still We’re Jolly Friends
    Forever More, More
    SHUT THE DOOR !!!

  • Sooyinchoi

When I was little we would sing it like this:
    Cece oh playmate
Come out and play with me
    and bring your dollies three
    climb up my candy tree
    slide down my rainbow
    into my cellar door
we’ll be the best of friends
    forever more more
    1 2 3 4

at the “1234” we would do the “quack diddly o’so” thing

    C C ALAY LAYA ,
    MINI MNIN AKA,
    MINI MINI AYO,
AKA PAKA AKA PAKA AKA PAKA
    SPLIT…..

THIS IS WHAT MY KIDS SING NOW HOW IT HAS CHANGED SINCE I WAS A LIL GIRL……

  • alexa

Me and my sister was just showing my niece this (we are 28 and 27) haha the full hand clapping too lol I came on line to find some lyrics as it was a little vague, I cannot believe how many different versions there are. We used to sing something like…

    Cece my play mate
Come out and play with me
    And bring your dolly rocker
    Slide down your drain pipe
    Into my cellar door
    And we’ll be happy friends
    Forever more forever more
Now shut that door in the name of the law!!

haha it doesn’t even make sense now. Although we just had so much fun trying to get the claps right lol

  • kk

Guys thats not the right one cause my freind says it’s cece my playmate come back and play with me for i am lonely and need some company slide down the rainbow and into paradise……..

  • Roxanne Sapra

I was taught, by my friend, when i was a child:

    Cece my playmate
I can not play with you
    Because i’ve got the flu
    Chicken pox and measles too
    Fly down the drainpipe
    Knock on the cellar’s door
    And we’ll be best friends
    Forever more more more

  • Roxanne Sapra

    Oh no, it’s:

    Cece my playmate
I can not play with you
    Because i’ve got the flu
    Chicken pox and measles too
    Climb down the drainpipe
    Knock on the cellar’s door
    And we’ll be best friends
    Forever more more more

    ……

I think it’s about a little girl dying in a cellar, being creepy and telling her friend to go and die with her so they can be together forever.
I know, way to make something really morbid and creepy.

I think this rhyme has many different words.
In that case, we can all make up our own too…

    Cece my playmate
I can not play with you
    Because i need the loo
    To do a number two

    I’ll be done soon though
Then we can play on the
    Climb climb climb climbing frame
And we’ll have so much fun
Like we do all the time
