Got Boob?

Peta has written a letter to Ben & Jerry’s asking them to use breast milk versus cow’s milk to make their ice cream. I would not mind a soy based option but I don’t really think I could stomach breast milk ice cream. What do you think?

My first reaction is Ewe! Gross!

Then, with a little more thought, I realized I was disturbed at the idea of equating women with livestock.

Plus, surplus breast milk is better served with milk banking, which can be used by babies for reasons of prematurity, allergies, feeding/formula intolerance, immunologic deficiencies, post-operative nutrition, infectious diseases, and inborn errors of metabolism. (See hmbana.org)

Yeah I completely agree with Haley – and even though I didn’t think of those uses until she mentioned it, I agree that those are better uses than using it to make ice cream… which is generally considered to be a luxury item.

    Hi Beeks!

I think this idea is totally gross. What’s the difference if we use cow’s milk versus human milk? It’s not like the cow is getting slaughtered to make the ice cream. Have you ever tasted breast milk? I have out of pure curiosity after the birth of my children and the stuff never dried up…I said what the hell and tasted it. Not quite the stuff found in Chunky Monkey:) I too think it would better serve sick babies or too fight disease.
