Darius Goes West

January 18th, 2008 · No Comments · Current Events

In May of 2005, I was reading a newsletter from my Alma Mater, The University of Georgia, and I found a small article about the efforts of another alumni trying to help a local teen. I went to his website and I was introduced to Darius Weems. Darius has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and had never left his hometown of Athens, Georgia. The goal of the group was to travel across the country with Darius, ultimately ending up in Los Angeles to convince MTV’s Pimp My Ride to customize Darius’s wheelchair. I was recovering from back surgery and Darius’ story reminded me of the summer I traveled across the country with my family, while recovering from surgery on both feet. I had to see America from a wheelchair that summer. Seeing the country was amazing and doing it from a wheelchair really made me aware of how limiting a physical handicap can be.  I was touched that students from UGA wanted to do that for Darius and I wanted to help. So, I made a small donation to their cause and wrote a letter wishing them a great trip. Jump forward three years and Darius Goes West is now an award winning documentary about Darius’s trip, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, handicap access, and friendship. Darius is also selected as one of the finalists in the 6th Annual Volvo for Life Awards as a one of the nation’s top Hometown Heroes! There is no one more deserving of this award than Darius.  He is an example of fortitude in the face of adversity for us all.
