The Caldecott Medal was named for the nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded each year by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children published during the previous year. The 2008 Caldecott Medal was awarded to Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village by Laura Amy Schlitz.

The Newberry Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newberry. It is awarded each year by the ALSC to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published during the previous year. The 2008 Newberry Medal was awarded to The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.
