404 Americans decide America is starting to love Chavez and Joe Kennedy

January 15th, 2008 · No Comments · Politics

The title of this entry is a little misleading, but according to a press release from HCD research there is some truth in my title for the 404 Americans they surveyed. They conducted interviews with Americans after they viewed the CITGO ads staring Joe Kennedy. Apparently after watching the ad, Americans had a more positive view of Venezuela and its President Hugo Chavez but most felt the ad was more political than philanthropic. Below is an example of a question from their survey:

Which of the following best describes your view of Hugo Chavez?

Prior to viewing the CITGO Ad         After viewing the CITGO Ad

Highly favorable — 3%                        Highly favorable — 20%
Somewhat favorable — 11%               Somewhat favorable — 44%
Somewhat unfavorable — 21%          Somewhat unfavorable — 8%
Highly Unfavorable — 30%                Highly Unfavorable — 3%
Not sure — 35%                                   Not sure — 25%

I am also not that impressed that this company could only find 404 Americans who had viewed the ad. Over the last few weeks, you could not turn on a TV in the Northeast and not see the CITGO ads. I don’t think this sample is large enough to draw any real conclusions about how American feel about Chavez, CITGO, Venezuela, or Joe Kennedy for that matter.
